Solo Cruise Travel

Solo Travel, is a style that I think about this a lot, especially as I am also a Solo Traveller in most travel scenario’s.

For me, when I travel on my own I always like to incorporate a cruise at some point. Usually, the beginning of my travel adventure and there is a reason why, but let me come back to this point later on. Firstly, let me paint the picture as to why I love cruising but particularly as a solo traveller.

Cruise is a great place to start your solo travel adventures

Travelling around the world on your own for the first time can be daunting.  From the moment you take the plunge to travel on your own (am I doing the right thing) it will leave you wondering what to expect.

Will you be safe travelling on your own.  Will turning up to a restaurant on our own have you receiving looks from a maître d’,.  And lastly, a thought that secretly we might all have –  will I be motivated to go out and explore each day and have the courage to meet new people.

Let’s keep in mind that we did just travel ½ way across the world, not to sit in an expensive hotel room to watch TV, I can do that at home.

So, with all this in mind, let me see if I can help convince you that taking a cruise as a SOLO traveller is the best way to start your solo travel career and experience the world.

From the moment you arrive

My highlight is pulling up a the cruise port, seeing the ship from the window of your taxi, with the crew standing out the front of the gangway, in some cases wearing white gloves. 

It gives you a sense of a time gone by, you automatically get the feeling of security and knowing you are going to be in good hands.

Prior to your arrival, the cruise lines are aware of the passengers on the ship that are travelling on their own.

Embarking the ship, having your hand luggage carried to your room.  You will generally have a welcome note from the onboard hotel director or one of the cruise staff welcoming you and giving you a time and place on the ship to meet up with the other solo passengers that are on board.

You will meet other solo travellers in social meetups

I know that the last thing that a Solo traveller wants to do is go and meet a shipload of other random solo guests, but it is important, throw yourself into the deep end and go, this is you’re your cruise experience begins to flourish.

There are a number of people that I have met in these social meetups have become long-lasting friends.

Do your own thing

The other point I wanted to make is other solo travellers know that as a solo traveller we like to have time to do our own thing. And I find that other

solo travellers respect each others time.  However, connecting with someone that shares then same interests as you or even if you don’t it might open you up to some new and exciting experiences.

Some cruise lines such as Seabourn, which is an ultra-luxury cruise line that only has an onboard maximum of 650 guests attract quite a number of solo passengers.  Being an intimate ship you connect with other passengers quite quickly.  And a smaller ship with fewer guests offers a country club vibe onboard.

I wanted to go back to my point I started with about doing a cruise as the first part of my travel adventure.  The reason why is that it gives you the chance to unwind in a relaxed environment that you have everything at your fingertips.  Food, entertainment time to sit by the pool and let the ship take you to your destination.

It also gives you the chance to meet new friends.  They could potentially turn into a travelling companion for the later part of your trip or it may not.  But I know from my personal experiences that I have met other solo travellers and sometimes we worked out that after the cruise we have both adjusted our plans to meet up in other cities together.  This for me brought about a level of security in other cities.
